History
On August 10, 1960, a delegation of bankers met in the Hermitage
Hotel in Nashville to organize a new division of the Tennessee
Bankers Association. There was one goal — to groom future
leaders of the banking industry in Tennessee.
The division was created to nurture the professional development
of the state’s young bank officers and prepare them to become
the industry’s next generation of leaders. Through the Young
Bankers Division, the Tennessee Bankers Association offers members
under the age of 40 the opportunity to become involved. It provides
a variety of educational opportunities for its members and promotes
community awareness of the banking industry.
Young bankers will find fellowship — defined as “a
sharing of common interests, goals, experiences, or views”
— through participation in:
• Annual Leadership Convention
• The Southeastern School of BankingSM
• Community financial literacy efforts through the Personal
Economics Program
• Day on the Hill where they can meet and exchange ideas
with members of the Tennessee General Assembly
• And more . . .
The success of the Young Bankers Division can be measured through
the many leaders in the banking industry, local communities across
the state, and the association itself who are products of these
efforts. Since the establishment of the division in 1960, a significant
number of bankers who were active in the Young Bankers Division
have advanced to become officers, directors, and committee chairmen
of the TBA — direct evidence of the division’s continuing
success in achieving its goal.

Bankers Programs
The
Southeastern School of Banking
The Young Bankers board of directors serves as the board of trustees
for The Southeastern School of Banking, one of the oldest and
most respected general banking schools in the country. Established
in 1939 as a two-day conference, the TSSB has evolved into an
intermediate-level, two-year general banking school. Potential
candidates are career financial industry employees in higher-ranking
staff or junior- to mid-management positions.
The curriculum focuses on critical banking functions, their interrelationships,
and determinants of profitability. Bankers develop analytical
skills and management techniques, along with an understanding
of the commercial bank’s role in the changing financial
services industry. The instructors include professional business
leaders and consultants, university professors, and outstanding
bankers.
Leadership
Convention
The annual Leadership Convention, sponsored by the Young Bankers
Division, is an opportunity for bankers to learn more about the
current state of the industry and to acquire leadership skills
that will benefit them in both their bank and their community.
The convention business program features speakers, workshops,
the election of division leaders, and financial literacy awards.
In addition, the agenda includes social activities that provide
the networking opportunities that promote both professional and
personal growth.
Day
on the Hill
Each March, the Young Bankers Division organizes a Day on the
Hill in conjunction with TBA’s government relations staff.
Day on the Hill encourages building strong relationships with
the lawmakers who are ultimately responsible for the business
climate of Tennessee and its local communities. The program gives
young bankers the opportunity to come visit the General Assembly
in session in Nashville. Here, they meet with legislators, staffers,
and the TBA legislative team to learn about the processes and
procedures of the state’s governing body, tour the Capitol,
and attend general and committee sessions. The Young Bankers Day
on the Hill is an excellent introduction into the world of government
relations that is so critical to the future of our industry.
Financial
Literacy
/ Personal Economics Program (PEP)
Increasing financial literacy and fiscal responsibility among
members of our communities is a mission bankers take seriously.
The Young Bankers Division has been involved in these efforts
since 1962 when the division first initiated an aggressive campaign
to assist teachers in broadening the public understanding of banking.
Today, members of the division coordinate the Personal Economics
Program (PEP), a volunteer effort by bankers to supplement conventional
education programs and reach out to students from kindergarten
through college, civic and business organizations, seniors groups,
and other consumers to help them understand personal money management,
the wise use of credit, ID theft, predatory lending, and other
such issues. The division presents awards to banks and bankers
who demonstrate exceptional efforts in the area of financial literacy.

Board
of Directors
For more than 45 years, the Young Bankers Division has produced
the future leaders in the state’s banking industry. For organizational
purposes, the division is divided into eight groups, which are defined
geographically by county.
The division is governed by a board of directors composed of four
executive officers and one representative from each of the eight
groups. Directors are elected by delegates representing the banks
in their group. During the annual Leadership Convention, delegates
from all the banks represented at the convention choose a new vice
president. This banker progresses in subsequent years to president-elect,
president, and chairman (the immediate past president).
If you are interested in running for a seat on the board or for
vice president, contact your current board member or the TBA staff
for information about the process.
The map on the left panel provides a county-by-county breakdown
for the groups. |
