THE SOUTHEASTERN SCHOOL OF COMMERCIAL LENDINGSM
34 Graduate from 2010 Program

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Bankers from Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi have completed requirements for graduation from the 2010 session of The Southeastern School of Commercial LendingSM (TSSCL). A total of 34 bankers attended the annual program, which was held at the Owen Graduate School of Management on the Vanderbilt University campus in Nashville, May 16 – 21. The Tennessee Bankers Association (TBA) conducts the school in cooperation with the Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi bankers associations.

Established in 1984, the TSSCL is an intensive, one-week school that exposes students to the major issues commercial loan officers face on a daily basis. It focuses on how the economy and business structure affect lending decisions.

Four graduates were recognized through the honors program, according to Bruce Reed, 2009-2010 chairman of the TSSCL board of trustees.

“Honor students rank in the top 10 percent of the class based on faculty and board evaluations and mid-term and final examination scores,” explained Reed who is executive vice president/chief credit officer with Commercial Bank & Trust Co, Paris, Tenn.

The honor graduates were:
•Ben Mauldin, Century Bank of Georgia, Cartersville, Ga.
•Matthew W. White, BancorpSouth, Collierville, Tenn.
•Matt Lorencen, Mountain Commerce Bank, Johnson City, Tenn.
•Matthew E. Farrell, Trustmark National Bank, Vicksburg, Miss.

The TSSCL curriculum incorporates more than 45 hours of classroom instruction into 10 modules — The External Environment, Understanding the Borrower’s Business, Understanding the Borrower’s Competitive Position, Evaluating Management, Assessing Borrower Financial Performance, Projecting Future Performance, Loan Structure and Support, Effective Relationship Management, Identifying and Managing Problem Loans, and Establishing Credit Discipline. These modules address topics such as how problem loans develop and the appropriate techniques for managing them, understanding the role of a company’s management and how to analyze and evaluate management, how businesses operate and the ways their financing needs arise, and meeting the multiple financial needs of customers through effective relationship banking.

The curriculum for The Southeastern School of Commercial Lending was developed in coopera-tion with the American Bankers Association, industry experts across the country, and the school’s board of trustees. Through lectures and interactive case studies, instructors cover basic and advanced analytical techniques, along with ways to apply those techniques when pricing and structuring loans.

The Southeastern School of Commercial Lending is one of the four highly respected Southeastern Schools conducted annually by the Tennessee Bankers Association.
