Tennessee bankers, security officers and staff joined some 70 other participants in the Take Back the Net seminar. The meeting featured an address by State Attorney General Bob Cooper and representatives from the FBI, AOL, MasterCard, Visa, and Microsoft.
Take Back the Net is an educational campaign sponsored by a coalition of business and law enforcement interested in improving security on the Internet. Recent consumer surveys indicate that expanded use of the Internet, particularly for financial transactions, is being significantly impaired by the perception that the Internet is not a secure transaction medium. Certainly, recent headlines featuring loss of consumer data and other hacking issues continue to raise consumer concern.
The Internet also holds special problems for parents. As the Internet moves from just a source of information to a social network with interactive social sites such as myspace.com, the need for parental control and supervision increases. Often children using the Internet are unaware of the need to limit their use of personally identifiable information such as their name, age, and residence. It is up to parents to increase their own awareness so that they can both monitor their children’s activity, as well as provide better education to prevent exposing their children to unnecessary risk.
The PowerPoint presentations of the individual speakers which contain numerous suggestions and guidelines for both consumers in the financial arena and parents in the social arena are available to download below.
