Talking Points

Sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, the fourth annual Get Smart About Credit Day will be held on October 19. On this day, (insert number) volunteer bankers from (insert state) will visit colleges, high schools, freshman orientations, youth groups, and continuing education classes to teach students how to budget, use credit cards responsibly and build a positive payment history.

The goal for Get Smart About Credit Day is to raise awareness about the responsible use of credit so teens and young adults can learn how to use credit correctly. The choices young adults make with their first credit card will impact their lives years later when they apply for a car loan or even a mortgage. Teaching young people how best to use credit will equip them to handle adult financial responsibilities.

Although millions of high school students take drivers education, most don’t learn the rules of the road for credit cards. Get Smart About Credit Day fills the gap when it comes to learning how credit works and understanding needs versus wants.

Get Smart About Credit Day is sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, a non-profit committed to developing and providing education programs that lead to financial literacy. Volunteer bankers will use lessons and activities from ABAEF's Get Smart About Credit resource kit.

The Get Smart About Credit resource kit provides bankers a comprehensive selection of lessons and activities. The curriculum includes: a “kick off" video featuring college students and young adults discussing their credit experiences, reproducible activities and handouts that address comparing cards, understanding the cost of credit, reading a credit report, budgeting, the signs of credit trouble, and preventing identity theft. The program is modeled after the highly successful ABAEF National Teach Children to Save Day.
