It is critical for banks subject to the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, or HMDA, to get HMDA right. Because examiners use HMDA data as part of their fair lending reviews, they expect and demand that the information reported on the HMDA Loan/Application Register not only be accurate but also fully report all covered loans, applications, and preapproval requests. Institutions that do not have an effective HMDA program can face a variety of regulatory responses ranging from examination criticism to civil money penalties.
