Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation
The Senior Crimestoppers program, administered by the Memphis-based Senior Housing Crime Prevention Foundation, gives banks an opportunity to play an important role in reducing crime against senior citizens. Through an investment or loan to the foundation, banks build good will in the community and can earn higher than normal yields while receiving Community Reinvestment Act credits. The foundation uses a portion of the yield from CRA-designated investments and loans to establish the Senior Crimestoppers program at nursing homes and housing units that serve low- and moderate-income residents in the banks’ direct assessment areas. Since its inception in 1995, Senior Crimestoppers has reduced crime at participating Tennessee nursing homes by 95.4 percent. Senior Crimestoppers operates in over 6,500 nursing homes, assisted living, retirement communities, and HUD housing venues in 48 states.

Thumbprint Signature Program
The TBA’s Thumbprint Signature Program, which has been praised by law enforcement officials and embraced by many Tennessee banks, offers an easy and inexpensive way to deter check fraud without inconveniencing customers. Here’s how it works: When nonaccount holders ask to cash a check at a participating bank, they must place an impression of their thumbprint on the face of the check. A small “inkless” touch pad is used, which leaves a clear black print that disappears from the thumb with slight rubbing. The procedure is quick, simple, and clean. Criminals foolish enough to put their thumbprints on bogus checks leave a positive ID that can be turned over to law enforcement officials. The program has been used as evidence in many cases and has assisted in the follow-up investigation of burglaries, thefts, and crimes other than forgeries.
